MOOCs-ers flock to IT Masters

IT Masters MoocsCharles Sturt University’s IT Masters’ foray into MOOCs - massive open online courses - is paying off with over 2000 enrolments to date. IT Masters CEO, Martin Hale said that, in addition to being a recruiting vehicle for IT Masters’ main courses, the courses were “a great way to test what are the hot topics in the industry.

“I think MOOCs are a great way for people who are considering further study to ‘try before they buy’ by studying part of a subject, so late last year we offered our first MOOC on Windows Phone 8,” Hale said. “We had a fantastic response with over 2000 students enrolling, and so we have decided to offer a series of MOOCs throughout the rest of the year.”

Hale said the Developing Apps for Windows Phone 8 course had been the most popular to date with 574 students enrolled. Doctor of IT research methodologies attracted 283, SharePoint 2013, 201 students and Agile Project Management 700.

All courses are presented as webinars during which students can interact with the presenter and each course has its own online forum that runs for the duration of that course. All sessions are recorded and are available for those unable to make the scheduled webinar.

There is a timed, open-book exam at the end of each course that students take at their own computer, and while success does not generate any university credits, all the courses are designed to help students develop skills that will assist them in further studies.

And as an added incentive, the top three students in each course get a decent tipple: wine packs from the winery of Charles Sturt University, an institution world famous for its study of wine science. (An overseas winner would receive a more easily shipped alternative prize).

IT Masters’ MOOCs kicked off late last year with Windows Phone 8 Development. Research Methodologies for Doctor of IT ran in April and SharePoint 2013 development started on 9 May.

Coming up is Microsoft Server 2013 in June, CISSP Security in July, Agile Project Management in August, Cisco CCNA in September, Developing Windows 8 Applications for the web in October and Cisco CCiE in November.

December’s MOOC has not yet been chosen and IT Masters is open to suggestions.
