Venture Capital firm, Andreessen Horowitz, have shared their views on the hottest tech trends in the world right now, in the annual “16 Things” list. We take a look at where the gurus will be putting their money this year and why it matters.

“You want to tilt into the really radical ideas… but by their nature you can’t predict what they will be,” Marc Andreessen

When the founder of Netscape and the digital world’s most visionary venture capital investors, offers a view on the future of technology, the industry listens.

Marc Andreessen and partner Ben Horowitz, the founders of the firm have issued their state of the tech nation view – ’16 things’ - the trends to watch and invest in.

While many of the trends including digital health, the Internet of Things, cloud and crowd funding, will come as no surprise, the list serves as the bellwether for many of these concepts gaining investor acceptance and wider industry traction.

“There will be certain points of time when everything collides and reaches critical mass around a new concept or a new thing that ends up being hugely relevant to a high percentage of people or businesses. But it’s really, really hard to predict those. I don’t believe anyone can,” Andreessen has said on the art of technology investment prediction.

Yet, the Andreessen Horowitz investment pedigree is perhaps the envy among the tech set as they began with an initial capitalization of $US300 million and within three years turned it into $US2.7 billion under management across three funds. The Andreessen Horowitz investment portfolio includes Facebook, Skype, Foursquare, Pinterest, and Twitter and is why their list is the one that matters.

“We don’t invest in themes; we invest in special founders with breakthrough ideas,” Andreessen Horowitz explained in their 16z blog post.

With each handpicked trend, one of the 16z partners contributes their thoughts on the viability of the technology.

The highlights:
