How to fix smart failure predicted on hard disk issue - MiniTool

The S.M.A.R.T. firmware not only detects failing sectors on a SATA or any hard drive, but this feature can move data from bad sectors to healthier sectors on the drive.

What is S.M.A.R.T. error?

S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) is an algorithm built in hard disks/SSDs, which discovers bad sectors and foresees impending errors on the drive.

When SMART failure predicts on the hard drive it might be an indication of failing disk. Presence of bad sectors in more number, increased drive's temperature or other environmental conditions sometimes gives rise to SMART error.

You are facing instances like unable to access the drive data, system no longer detecting the drive etc because of SMART error then it is suggested to safeguard your data from failing disk/SSD and proceed to fix the issue.

How to fix SMART error (in Windows)?

  1. Click the Windows Start button, and then click the “Computer” icon in the Start menu. The Computer window opens.
  2. Right-click on the option for your hard drive to display the context menu.
  3. Click the “Properties” option. The Properties window opens.
  4. Click the tab labeled “Tools,” and then click “Check Now.” The Disk Utility opens.
  5. Check the checkbox next to the “Automatically Fix File System Errors” option.
  6. Check the checkbox next to the “Scan for and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors” option.
  7. Click the “Start” button. The Check Disk utility checks the SATA hard drive for errors and attempts to repair the errors.
  8. Reboot the computer once the utility has finished running. The S.M.A.R.T. error should be clear.

If the ways are not working to fix or disable SMART failure predicted on hard disk 0/1/2/4 error. The only way is to replace the failing hard drive with another hard drive containing the disk copy made by MiniTool programs – MiniTool ShadowMaker and MiniTool Partition Wizard.

Back up Computer in Case of SMART Failure

Backing up your computer is always a good idea. It means you are taking a proactive approach to your data.

Consider it your way of taking an insurance policy out on your computer that will protect you from the internal and external forces that threaten its safety. If you don’t back up your computer today, you are at risk for viruses, hackers, and hard drive failure that can cause you to lose your data forever.

When receiving SMART hard disk error, take it easy. And you still have some time to keep your disk data safe.

Back up your data now!

Data Backup Software – MiniTool ShadowMaker

MiniTool ShadowMaker, reliable and professional backup software, can help you to back up your files, system, partition, and disk by its Backup feature.

During the backup process, the selected partition data will be compressed to an image, saving much disk space. But here, we don't suggest using this feature since recovery is a little troublesome when your hard disk failure happens.

Additionally, another backup method – disk cloning is also supported by this backup software. Its Clone Disk feature can transfer all contents from one disk to another.

Step 1: Select Backup Module
Open MiniTool ShadowMaker. Then, in the following interface, hit Connect button in the Local or Remote module to enter next interface.

Note that this free backup software only lets you make a remote backup in the same LAN.

Step 2: Navigate to Tools tab.
Then, this program will go to the Home page. Here, you can't find the feature to do disk cloning.

Just navigate to Tools located in the toolbar and then click Clone Disk feature to begin your backup.

Step 3: Choose clone source disk and target disk.
In the following interface, you see two sections are shown. Please click the corresponding section to choose source disk and destination disk.

Step 4: Perform disk cloning operation.
Here comes the copy progress. In the following interface, some information about the disk cloning is listed including source disk, destination disk, elapsed time, remaining time and cloning progress bar.

With the backup, if SMART failure error happens on your system disk, you can directly boot your PC from the target disk without reinstalling OS.
