Why does a Windows Backup Stuck at 97%? The most common causes of the problem you are describing tend to be: some system files are locked by other programs so that Windows fails to access the files; there is not enough disk space for the backup; bad sectors exist in your system disk or the destination disk.
Windows Backup Hangs
“For the past two days, I have been trying to run Windows Backup onto an external hard drive, but keep encountering various issues. The first few attempts resulted in various error codes, which I attempted to resolve through various resolutions I found online (i.e., disabling Security Essentials, running a disk check). In my latest attempt, the backup is stuck at 97% progress. Has been at this point for at least 3 hours. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
To troubleshoot this I would suggest looking for a way to back up the operating system.
I have never been much of a fan of the built-in backup solution provided by Microsoft as part of their operating systems. They tend to be somewhat cumbersome and, on occasion, unreliable. I tend to use a third party application for this kind of task. A program like MiniTool ShadowMaker, which is very robust and versatile software backup solutions worthy of consideration.
