Defense Grid 2 or also fondly known as DG2, is the highly-anticipated sequel to the hit 2008 game Defense Grid: The Awakening.
Developed Hidden Path Entertainment, published by 505 Games, the game had just recently released on September 2014 and is the long-awaited sequel for the highly addictive 2008 Defense Grid. I have to confess that when I have nothing much to do or while on the train waiting for my stop, tower defense game is something you can pick up and play and forget about it. Then when the next opportunity arises, you start playing it again.
With Defense Grid 2, it sets the bar as the definitive tower defense game as it introduces new worlds and threats to test your tower placement strategies. With a bold new look, a compelling single-player campaign and the addition of new game modes; online player-versus-player and multiplayer co-op, every play-through brings new opportunities and challenges and you won’t get bored that easily.
Defense Grid 2 comes with a strong single player story campaign that features 21 stunning maps, dynamic level movement, an expanded story and cast of characters, hundreds of challenge mode experiences, new multiplayer modes, a procedurally driven audio score and the ability for the players themselves to build their own levels. That’s where the game introduces DG Architect, a level creation tool set that connected to Steam Workshop, where players can create their own unique levels to share and possibly even sell if it is hugely popular.
With lots of units at your disposal with each of it having their own strengths and weaknesses, be prepared to change your strategy on the fly as a multitude of enemies keep on spawning as one tower might easily kill them while another tower might just scratch them just a little bit.
Overall, Defense Grid 2 doesn’t really feel like a tower defense game and that’s because of the engaging storyline as it gives you the motivation to keep on playing towards the very end. There are also achievements waiting to be unlocked that you can be proud of within your peers.
Although tower defense game are few and far between, Defense Grid 2 is in a class of its own. The computer requirements are indeed high for this type of game and even that tells you something that the developers are pushing for the best technology in this game. The only not so good thing is that we may have to wait 5-6 more years for the sequel to be released.
