UAE has one of the most impressive economies in the Middle East. Largely due to the economic performance of the constituent states of Dubai and Sharjah, its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 4.3% from US$174.4 Billion in 2000 to US$3331.3 Billion in 2016.
Electricity consumption followed suit, growing at a CAGR of 9.4% during the same period. Although the region is not highly industrialized, the rapid growth of the services industry and vast investment in real estate has ensured the growth of electricity consumption.
In 2016, thermal sources accounted for 99.6% of UAEs total installed capacity, with gas-based capacity contributing 99.5% and oil-based thermal capacity contributing only 0.1%. The remaining 0.4% came from renewable sources, of which concentrated solar power or solar thermal power contributed to 0.3% while solar photovoltaic (PV) and onshore wind contributed the remaining 0.1%.
Although thermal power sources will continue to dominate the power mix, renewable energy is likely to see substantial growth, with the government emphasizing the development of both solar and wind projects. The UAEs renewable power generation is less than 1 TWh, but is expected to reach 1 TWh by 2018 due to upcoming solar power projects.
The 100 Megawatt (MW) Shams 1 solar thermal power plants are already online.
