Behlen Industries LP, a Canada-based prominent supplier of steel building solutions, has recently introduced robotic welder system to boost quality and bolster capacity in creating custom steel products; the application of advanced Automation 3D technology enables the desired functioning of robotic systems. Behlen has made a foray into advanced automation technology market three years back and its competency has strengthened since then. The housing of robotics welder is considered as the first programmable system that can create a range of custom steel products with the help of 3D software.
The automation software enables the robotic welding systems to handle steel beams of length as long as 60 feet. As Sean Lepper, Vice President & General Manager at Behlen, says, “The highly customized nature of our product makes it hard to get into automation”.
He further adds: “The software allows us to manipulate how the robots mount, the way they move, how they move the beams and the size of beams we’re able to work with.”
The company is Canada’s largest manufacturer of steel building systems and is considered as pioneer in producing frameless steel buildings. All the project at the company’s Brandon manufacturing facility are customized, and the welding robotics used previously were mostly for predefined and repetitive tasks.
To avoid the long manual work, the use of robotics welding systems is imminent, and the company, with the aid of advanced 3D software in welding, has increased bolstered its strength in precisely framing steel structures. Behlen put the system in active operation last month and since then it has been useful in containing production errors; in addition, the system addresses key production bottlenecks by offering readily available capacity boost during on- and off-peak production cycles.
The robotic welding system—claimed to be a strategic combination of software, robotics and processes—enabled the company to gain competence in highly-variable, low-volume work.
According to Behlen, the robot can accomplish customized welding jobs three times faster than human workers; however, as the manufacturer claims, this would not lead to laying off its floor workers. The company has revealed that the welding robotic system and the human counterparts will complement each other.
