The magnesium oxide can be used in Buna-N rubber. The molecular formula of magnesium oxide is MgO. It can be divided into light magnesium oxide and heavy magnesium oxide.
The apparent density of light magnesium oxide is less than or equal to 0.5g/mL, and the heavy magnesium oxide is three times as the light.
And the heavy magnesium oxide is white or maize-yellow powder, the relative density is 3.58, almost completely insoluble in water and ethyl alcohol. And it can soluble in dilute acid and ammonium salt solution. It has high fire resistance and adiabaticity, and the melting point is 2800°C. When places it in the moist air for a long time, it would absorb water and carbon dioxide. After generating the magnesium hydrogen carbonate, it will go bad. The light magnesium oxide is more easily to absorb water and carbon dioxide than the heavy. Adding water, rinsing and subsiding the magnesium carbonate and magnesium hydrate, putting them into the reverberatory furnace after stoving and smashing, heating up to 800°C and 900°C, burning them about 5 or 6 hours. And then, chilling and selecting them, it can gain the finished product of light magnesium oxide. If the temperature is more than 900°C, it can gain the heavy magnesium oxide.
The light magnesium oxide can be used for the filler and enhancer in rubber and plastics. In the rubber industry, it also can be used as the vulcanizing activator and the inorganic accelerator. In the pharmaceutical industry, it can be applied as acid inhibitors. In the chemical industry, it often used as the raw material of catalyst and other magnesium compounds, and the material of grease, dye, ceramics, enamel, glass and other industries.
The heavy magnesium oxide used for making refractory matter and thermal insulation material. In the Buna-N rubber, it can be used for the fortifier of heat-resistant sizing material. Adding moderate magnesium oxide into the chloroprene rubber, it can improve the tensile strength, stress at definite elongation and hardness of vulcanized rubber. What’s more, it can neutralize hydrogen chloride which is produced during vulcanization and or by sunniness. However, it has not perfect heat resisting property.
