The condition of either the presence of infrequent or shallow breathing or small pauses in breathing is referred to as sleep apnea. The different categories of sleep apnea include central sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea, and mixed sleep apnea.

The rise in the relative number of sleep apnea cases is mostly attributed to conditions such as obesity, Type II diabetes, cognitive heart failure, hypertension, coronary artery disease, stroke, and atrial fibrillation. Majority of studies have demonstrated results that over 70% of cases of Type II diabetes patients suffer from sleep apnea and about 70% of hypertensive patient also suffer from sleep apnea.
