Growth in the peritoneal dialysis concentrates market will be a result of steady increases in the number of ESRD patients being treated with peritoneal dialysis.

A couple factors also impact the relatively large size of the peritoneal dialysis concentrates market, given its proportionally small patient population. One factor is that a single peritoneal dialysis cycle is performed approximately five times a day.

Another is that hemodialysis concentrate is mixed with water to form dialysate, whereas peritoneal dialysis concentrate is not. A peritoneal dialysis patient undergoes treatments on a daily basis, each of which requires peritoneal dialysis fluids.

The typical peritoneal dialysis patient uses 2.64 gallons (10L) of concentrates on a daily basis. This translates to approximately 964 gallons of concentrates per year, per peritoneal dialysis patient.

In comparison, a standard hemodialysis patient uses approximately three gallons of concentrates per treatment; however, they only undergo approximately 13 treatments per month. This calculates to approximately 452 gallons of concentrates per year, per hemodialysis patient.

Thus a peritoneal dialysis patient typically requires more double the volume of concentrates than a hemodialysis patient, on an annual basis. As a result, increases in the peritoneal dialysis patient population will be a driver of growth for the overall dialysis concentrates market.

There are two main types of concentrates for hemodialysis: acid and bicarbonate (base). Treated water is mixed with acid and bicarbonate concentrates to form the dialysis fluid (dialysate).

Hemodialysate (dialysate) is the fluid and solutes that flows through the dialyzer during a hemodialysis process. After the combination of the bicarbonate concentrate, acid concentrate and water, the final dialysate can contain two or three buffer components, which depend on the acid concentrate used.

The buffers are bicarbonate from the bicarbonate concentrate, citrate and/or acetate from the acid concentrate.
