A number of technologies were discussed in depth at Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC)formerly known as Dryden Flight Research Center, with a particular emphasis on a groundbreaking new technology that could save hundreds of lives each year.
The Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System (Auto-GCAS), developed at AFRC, is a revolutionary software that aims to greatly reduce incidents of controlled flight into terrain aircraft accidents. The system essentially uses the aircrafts flight computer to detect the grounds approach, interpret how much time remains before impact, and initiate an auto-pilot command, which maneuvers the aircraft to avoid a crash.
A Collision Avoidance System includes an electro-optical rangefinder scanner, retro reflectors on target vehicles, and a processing unit. The rangefinder supplies data on the range and angle of target vehicles to the processor, which monitors each target vehicle's position, speed and acceleration and constantly determines and updates target range, angle, velocity, acceleration and predicted separation distances.
A warning signal or evasive maneuver instructions are issued if the predicted separation at the time of intercept is below a minimum acceptable value.

The technology is now being developed for USAF F-22 and F-35 fighters. Additionally, the system is set to be integrated into a broader array of handheld devices, allowing the Auto-GCAS system to be used in a wide variety of aircraft, with plans even being made to implement the technology in ground-based vehicles.
