The growing reach of ecommerce pulls down one of the last bastions of retail purchase – prescription drugs and medical supplies. Early reports foresee big wins for those who move fast.
While the healthcare spending in the US reached US$ 3.5TN in 2017, the sector seems to be set for a paradigm shift. The reason? A steep rise in number of people buying medicine and medical supply online.
The global online pharmacy market is expected to touch US$128 billion by 2023, thanks in no small part to the spread of internet across the world. The convenience of doorstep delivery and competitive pricing are the two principal factors that are driving the growth of online pharmacies.
“When Amazon announced in June 2018 that it was buying Pillpack, an online pharmacy that employs about a thousand people, the message was clear: purchase of prescription drugs, medical supplies and allied products like nutrition-booster was moving online in a big way.” declares Kaartik Iyer, founder CEO Infigic Technologies, a Pharmacy app development company that has built ready web & mobile app solutions for Pharmacies.
He is right. With the ubiquitous smartphone, people no longer have to be tied to a computer or even a laptop to make purchases.
“You could be standing, waiting at the subway and order those drugs for your ailing mother or a friend in less than a minute – that’s the convenience mobile apps for buying medicine online has brought.” says Iyer “Placing an order for medical supplies with an online pharmacy is probably easier than playing Candy Crush!”
Convenience is a multi-faceted term with an online pharmacy. Next-day delivery is quite common and there are options for same-day delivery too. Moreover, online pharmacies work with insurance providers too, making the process easier and faster. Added features like reminders for timely intake of medicines or sachets packed as per dosages build peace of mind for customers.
“It’s so relieving to know that you’ll be able to order medicines at any time you want – you are no longer at the mercy of their schedules!” Iyer explains. With the number of online pharmacy apps his firm has built, he should know.
