Nearly all cars, trucks and other automobiles have an air filter. In fact, most modern automobiles have two air filters: one for the engine and another for the cabin. While both of these air filters are designed to remove contaminants from the air, they each serve their own unique purpose.
Typically found in the dashboard, the cabin air filter lives up to its namesake by filtering air inside the automobile's cabin.

As air enters the automobile's cabin -- the area inside the automobile, such as the driver and passenger seats -- it passes through a mesh filter. The mesh material from which the filter is made catches dust, pollen, dirt and other pollutants, preventing those pollutants from entering the automobile's cabin.
The engine air filter, on the other hand, is found in an automobile's air intake box. Like the cabin air filter, it also removes pollutants from the air. The difference, however, is that the engine air filter cleans the air entering the engine, whereas the cabin air filter cleans the air entering the automobile's cabin.
Depending on the type of automobile, the engine air filter may need replacing once every 15,000 to 40,000 miles. Failure to replace this component could result in problems due to lack of airflow to the automobile's engine. As the engine air filter accumulates dirt, it will restrict the flow of air. Unfortunately, this means the engine won't get a sufficient amount of air, which could cause misfires, a check engine light (CEL) or other related problems.
