Radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags are used in a variety of high-tech applications involve the wireless transmission of data. The following report takes a closer look at the global RFID tags market and where it's headed.

A radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag is an electronic device that's used to track data wirelessly. As the name suggests, they rely on radio waves to send and receive data. RFID tags contain data, such as passwords, that are used in conjunction with an RFID reader. The RFID reader scans its surrounding environment while searching for potential RFID tags.

If the RFID reader discovers a tag, it will pull data from that tag.
RFID tags can be classified as either active or battery-assisted passive. The former features a built-in battery that regularly transmits data, whereas the latter has a built-in battery that only transmits data when an RFID reader is nearby. Both types of RFID tags are effective at sending data to an RFID reader. The difference, however, is that only active RFID tags constantly transmit data. Therefore, they are typically more effective at coupling with an RFID reader, but they also have a shorter battery life than their battery-assistive passive counterparts.
Of course, RFID tags can't be used alone. They must be used in conjunction with an RFID reader. RFID readers, like RFID tags, can be active or passive. Active RFID readers constantly scan their surrounding environment while searching for an RFID tag. In comparison, passive RFID readers only scan their surrounding environment when there's a radio signal being transmitted from a nearby RFID tag.
While RFID tags, as well as RFID readers, are still relatively new, they've since found their way into a variety of applications. RFID tags and readers are used in the manufacturing industry, for example to track products during production. They are also used in contactless payment systems in the retail industry. You can even find RFID tags and readers used in airports to track luggage.
