By definition, a touchscreen panel is any type of display interface that's able to detect and respond to a user's touch. With that said, the way in which they achieve this goal varies depending on the specific type of touchscreen technology.
In the past, resistive touchscreen panels were the most popular solution. They are called "resistive" because they feature two transparent layers made of an electrically resistive material.
There's typically a layer of air separating these two layers. When you touch the panel, you'll press the two electrically resistive layers together, at which point the resistive touchscreen can pinpoint exactly when and where you touched.
While resistive touchscreens are still around, many manufacturers have since shifted their focus to capacitive touchscreens. Capacitive touchscreens are also able to detect touch commands -- just like resistive touchscreens.
However, they work in a completely different way. Capacitive touchscreens feature an electrical charge that's applied to the top layer.
It's not enough to cause a noticeable shock. Rather, it's just enough to electricity to detect touch commands.
If you touch a capacitive touchscreen, the electrical charge will become weaker. This is because your finger will absorb some of the electricity, at which point the voltage applied to the top layer will drop.
The capacitive touchscreen will then detect the lower voltage and register it as a command. In addition to resistive and capacitive, other types of touchscreens include surface acoustic wave (SAW), acoustic pulse recognition and projected capacitive.
Regardless, all of these technologies allow users to control the device using a finger or stylus.
