Research report explores the measure blood pressure and detect hypertension on smartphone technology

Telecommunications Market Research

Blood pressure is a critical condition that needs regular check-ups and patients often take measurements on their own instead of running toward a clinic.

Researchers at the Michigan State University developed a novel smartphone that can accurately measure blood pressure just by a press of the index finger. To measure the blood pressure, the index finger is placed over the sensor the smartphone and pressed against it with little pressure.

The device carefully monitors the amount of force exerted on the sensor, an optical component measures how light penetrating through the figure varies its characteristics, and the system converts these readings into blood pressure measurement. This innovative technology can replace the bulky procedure of blood pressure measurement of the traditional devices.

However, very few patients do as they are prescribed and tend to ignore the regular check-ups. Due to lack of motivation, bulky and unwieldy device, patients ignore blood pressure measurements.

Therefore, the modern smartphones and medical system integrators have come to rescue. These devices provide almost same accuracy and precision as the traditional blood pressure devices as the technology incorporates sensitive sensors and reduce human error.

The cuff-less blood pressure system was tested against upper arm cuffs as well as figure cuffs. It showed almost similar readings as upper arm cuffs and slightly accurate results compared to figure cuffs.

The paper was published in the Science Translational Medicine, the researchers described the working of the prototype of blood pressure sensor incorporated into a smartphone. Ramakrishna Mukkamala, the leader of the study and a biomedical engineer at Michigan State believes that the device could encourage people to check their blood pressure regularly, which can allow them to spot signs of hypertension–commonly detected than high blood pressure–sooner.

In addition, hypertension most often leads to stroke and other heart diseases, and about half of the people with the condition are unaware of the signs of hypertension.
