Magna International Inc. announced the onset of serial production of GETRAG 6DCT150 on May 27, 2016 in an official press release. Specifically designed for the Chinese market, the production facility of Dongfeng GETRAG Transmission Co., Ltd. is a 50/50 joint venture  of GETRAG and Dongfeng Motor Group that came into existence in 2012. The dual-clutch transmission engine is a third-generation, compact-gear design – developed under joint efforts of the JV partners. While, Dongfeng GETRAG Transmission Co., Ltd. is among the two GETRAG engineering and manufacturing joint ventures in China.

(DCT), especially constructed for front-transverse purposes in compact cars. With six forward gears, one reverse gear, and a wet clutch, the automatic transmission fulfills growing market demands in China for a smaller, light-weight arrangement for automotive engines.

In addition to that, this transmission is capable of contributing to an encouraging fleet fuel-consumption rating, as well as lowering fuel costs for individual vehicle customers. Another DCT family member, the GETRAG 6DCT200 will also be brought to the China car market in 2017.

Didier Lexa, Chief Technical Officer, GETRAG, quoted, “Compared to automatic torque converters and continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) available in the low-cost segment, the GETRAG low-torque DCTs can achieve a fuel-consumption advantage of 10 to 20 percent.” Explaining further, he said, “It can also achieve a fuel-consumption advantage of 5 percent compared to a five-speed manual transmission. The GETRAG low-torque DCTs can therefore provide an efficient and affordable automatic transmission to lower-priced vehicles."

“The Chinese car market is important to us. The joint development of 6DCT150 and 6DCT200 together with Dongfeng, shows that we take this market and its requirements very seriously," said YoungHo Lee, CEO (Asia-Pacific), GETRAG during the release.

Magna had acquired GETRAG earlier this year as a part of its powertrain operating unit. Apart from expanding its production volumes, it also brought new additions to its portfolio.
