How about mobile applications that need not be installed on your phone? Many mobile app users find it not worthy to download a big app for a small task. Mobile app development companies follow certain strategies to get more and more downloads. What is the point of those strategies if users are going to uninstall your app after a while?
We are familiar with the fact that there are millions of mobile apps in the world. India, USA, UK are some of the countries with the highest number of mobile app developers.
The primary objective of any mobile app is to offer ease in time-consuming tasks. Let us take an example of bank apps.
Banking apps have made all procedures easy and faster.
Customers need not to stand in the long queue. Apps have also made shopping more interesting.
It is not the scenario any more where customers have to wander store to store to get that one piece of stuff exactly how they wanted. Customers can simply purchase any stuff any time from anywhere through m-commerce.
This all sounds easy and fun. But the fact figures show some challenges for app development companies. As per a reportgenerated by App Annie, an average smartphone user has 80 mobile apps and uses only 40 on a regular basis.
Many smartphone users prefer uninstalling apps as half of them are not in regular use.
Though some apps are not used regularly, the user cannot delete them. Users do not uninstall such apps.
Banking apps for instance. The user does not use banking apps on a daily basis. Who will send money to others on a daily basis? But these apps are important and usually, users spend memory on these apps.
Memory can be the biggest reason behind uninstalling apps. Google launched progressive web apps to offer a solution to these problems.
These apps are web apps with the exact feeling of native apps. The progressive web apps also offer offline functioning.
The users can actually access the apps offline.
This is a revolutionary change as web apps were totally dependant on the internet. It is not the case anymore. The progressive web apps also offer push notifications just like a native app.
Be it about any new update or new offers, the notification pops up on your screen just like other installed apps.
This is not it. Due to the capability of background synchronization, a shortcut of the apps can be created on a smartphone’s home screens. You just need to go to the options bar and select ‘Add to Home screen’.
In short, you get to use a native-like app with zero absent features without actually installing it and spending memory on it.
Now let us talk about web APKs. what exactly are web APKs? Apps in android are installed in packages (APKs).
When any native app is installed, it generates an APK file. These APKs are important to manage the apps, settings, track app usage, etc.
But web APKs let you install the progressive web app properly.
Just like other native apps, progressive web apps can be added to the app drawer. When you try to install a progressive web app, the google chrome automatically generates and installs a special APK of the app.
These are nothing but WebAPKs. When progressive web apps are installed via APKs, they can completely act like native apps. You can see it in the app launcher and manage the app through settings; just like other apps.
As mentioned, you can change and manage the app settings. You can check the data usage by the app, you can see the memory space taken by the app.
Also, you can see battery consumption by the PWA. you can easily find the app in the all app section of your phone.
The best part about the PWA web APKs is that you can edit the name of the PWA. this feature is not provided with native or hybrid apps.
Not only name, but you can also change and edit the logo of the app as per your convenience.
Chrome requires to check the manifest while installing the WebAPK. When current manifest and live manifest have some differences, the chrome requests for an update of the app.
Once the smartphone gets wifi, the update can be done.
The WebAPK installations are only possible with Dev and Canary channels on Chrome for Android. Being in a technical field, it is important for you to understand that WebAPK for progressive web apps is just a start.
In the future, we are expecting more features in PWAs. By integrating PWA and WebAPKs, users are able to use web apps as native apps.
Progressive web apps are not listed in Android's play store. The PWAs with WebAPK is an attempt to bring more ease in accessing progressive web apps.
