Gionee is one of the many manufacturers coming out from China and the F5 being the latest one that had just been launched and expected to be released this month as well.

Let’s begin by scrutinising the F5 which has the below specs:

  • 5.3-inch HD IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 720 x 1280 pixels or ~277 ppi pixel density
  • Mediatek MT6750 chipset, Octa-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Mali-T860MP2 graphics and 4GB RAM
  • 13MP primary camera with autofocus and LED flash
  • 8MP secondary camera
  • 32GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to maximum 256GB
  • Non-removable Li-Po 4000 mAh battery
  • Android Marshmallow 6.0
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • February 2017 release date
  • $1,799 Chinese Yuan or ~$259 USD

From the outset of it, the F5 seems to be sporting a rather peculiar 5.3-inch size – and only High Definition to go with it. That’s somewhat disappointing to have such specs in 2017.

Well, it doesn’t stop there you know. Moving on to the performance side of things, the F5 will be powered by a MT6750 chipset, a lowly speed octa-core processor, decent graphics and 4GB RAM. Somehow it doesn’t seem too balanced, a better chipset with a faster processor should do the trick, but that’s just some wishful thinking.

As for the camera department, a good 13MP-8MP camera setup is available which you can certainly have lots of fun with. Go and snap away, which you can later publish on your favourite social media.

Talking about having fun, you should take note that the F5 only has 32GB of internal storage available. That shouldn’t worry you though, as you can easily expand it up to a maximum of 256GB via its microSD slot.

With a large 4000 mAh battery on the F5, it can easily power up the smartphone for at least a day or two in between charging. That is indeed some good news to it.

Last but not least, it will still be running on the dated Marshmallow 6.0 OS. There’s no indication that it will get an update to the latest Nougat 7.0, so you may have to bear with it.

Conclusion:

Gionee F5 is a good mid-range smartphone but bogged down with a heavy price tag. It should have been priced at below $200 to be able to strike a balance, but as far as it stands now – it is hard to justify its price.

Gionee F5 is expected to be released in February 2017 for approximately $1,799 Chinese Yuan or ~$259 USD. It is said to be available in Gold and Rose Gold colour.
