Idol 5s have a tall order to replace its predecessor, dubbed the Idol 4S. Back in July 2016, it got a wonderful reception thanks to its superb specs and affordable pricing as you can see below:

  • 5.5-inch Quad HD AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 1440 x 2560 pixels or ~534 ppi pixel density
  • Slim metal body at just 153.9 x 75.4 x 7 mm (6.06 x 2.97 x 0.28 in) and weighs 149 g (5.26 oz)
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Qualcomm MSM8976 Snapdragon 652 chipset, Octa-core processor made up of Quad-core 1.8 GHz Cortex-A72 & Quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A53, Adreno 510 graphics and 3GB RAM
  • 16MP primary camera with f/2.0, phase detection autofocus, dual-LED (dual tone) flash
  • 8MP secondary camera with LED flash
  • 32GB internal storage + 200GB microSD expansion
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow
  • Dual-sim capability 4G LTE connectivity
  • July 2016 release date

The Idol 4S has practically everything that you need from a device, and the fact that it carries a price tag that is cheaper than other competitors makes it very desirable.

Now that we are in 2017, Alcatel is gearing up the Idol 5s to make its public appearance by the end of this month. Without further ado, let’s check out what is in store for us:

  • 5.7-inch Quad HD AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 1440 x 2560 pixels or ~515 ppi pixel density
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Mediatek MT6757 Helio P20 chipset, Octa-core (4x2.3 GHz Cortex-A53 & 4x1.7 GHz Cortex-A53) processor, Mali-T880MP2 RAM and 3GB/4GB RAM
  • 16MP primary camera with f/1.8 aperture, phase detection autofocus and dual-LED (dual tone) flash
  • 8MP secondary camera with LED flash
  • 32GB/64GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to 256GB maximum
  • Non-removable Li-Ion battery with Fast battery charging
  • Android Nougat 7.0 OS
  • Dual-sim capability 4G LTE connectivity
  • Q2 2017 release date

There are a couple of upgrades happening to the Idol 5s, and you would wish there was more to it than meets the eye.

The Idol 5s happens to be sporting a larger 5.7-inch Quad HD AMOLED screen which provides for more real estate to whatever it is you are viewing. Nothing beats a large screen with this high screen resolution, everything will look crisp and detailed.

Moving on to the performance side of things, it is a surprise change to Mediatek and more specifically the Helioi P20 chipset, fast octa-core processor, good graphics and now comes an option to go with 4GB RAM. If the price difference isn’t that much, best if you opt for the additional 1GB RAM variant.

In terms of camera, you don’t get to see much difference between Idol 5s and its predecessor. It will be sporting a similar 16MP-8MP camera setup with same feature and functions. Not much of an upgrade here.

Storage-wise, you can now opt for 64GB of internal storage which is a nice change. Whichever option that you choose, there’s still room for future expansion with the availability of the microSD expansion slot which can take in up to a maximum of 256GB.

Last but not least, the latest Android Nougat 7.0 OS is there right out of the box which is a great compliment to the Idol 5s. This will allow it to maximise its hardware and utilise all the latest features that the latest OS brings to the table.

Conclusion:

Alcatel Idol 5s is a nice upgrade going into 2017, and you will get to see it live this end of February. The only grouse is that the camera seems to be stagnant when others are moving towards the dual camera setup.

Alcatel Idol 5s is set to be launched on February 27th during Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona. There’s no word on the price yet. It is said to be available in various colours for you to choose from.
