It seems that Xiaomi is all set to conquer the entry-level market space with the recent announcement of Redmi 4X. With just a budget of $100 USD, you will be getting real value for your money.

But before we begin, let’s take a look back at its predecessor – Redmi 4. It was released just November last year with the following specs:

  • 5-inch HD IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 720 x 1280 pixels or ~296 ppi pixel density
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Metal body
  • Qualcomm MSM8937 Snapdragon 430 chipset, Octa-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Adreno 505 graphics and 2GB RAM
  • 13MP primary camera with f/2.2 aperture, phase detection autofocus and LED flash
  • 5MP secondary camera with f/2.2 aperture
  • 16GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to maximum 256GB
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 4100 mAh battery with Fast battery charging
  • Android Marshmallow 6.0.1
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • $104 USD price tag
  • November 2016 release date

Even then, who would have expected that for just $104 USD that you will be getting a smartphone with a metal body and fingerprint sensor. These two features are normally found in a mid-range smartphone with mid-range pricing.

How would Redmi 4X be different in 2017? Let’s scrutinise it further as per below:

  • 5-inch HD IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 720 x 1280 pixels or ~296 ppi pixel density
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Metal body
  • Qualcomm MSM8940 Snapdragon 435 chipset, Octa-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Adreno 505 graphics and 2GB/3GB RAM
  • 13MP primary camera with f/2.0 aperture, phase detection autofocus and LED flash
  • 5MP secondary camera with f/2.2 aperture
  • 16GB/32GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to maximum 256GB
  • Non-removable Li-Po 4100 mAh battery with Fast battery charging
  • Android Marshmallow 6.0.1
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • $100 USD for 16GB storage + 2GB RAM and $130 USD for 32GB storage + 3GB RAM
  • March 2017 release date

There are only some subtle differences between the Redmi 4X and its predecessor. The 5-inch screen size is still there, so is its fingerprint sensor and metal body.

The first main upgrade is on its better Snapdragon 435 chipset and an option to opt for 3GB RAM to boosts things up a bit.

On the camera department, there’s the same 13MP-5MP camera setup – so expect more of the same with the Redmi 4X.

Storage-wise, you now have an option to go for 32GB internal storage which is a nice change. Even if you opt for just the 16GB internal storage variant, you can easily add up to 256GB storage via the available microSD slot.

In terms of battery, the available 4100 mAH battery should be sufficient to last you for at least a day or two in between charging.

But one disappointment fact is that, the Redmi 4X will still be running on Android Marshmallow 6.0. There’s little to no chance that it will get an update to the latest Nougat 7.0.

Conclusion:

Xiaomi Redmi 4X presents an existing user with a nice upgrade and it costs even less than last year’s Redmi 4 which it was based on. A better chipset is there, and now there’s an option to go for the better 32GB storage + 3GB RAM variant, for $30 USD more.

Xiaomi Redmi 4X will be released in the next couple of days and it will be available for $100 USD for the 16GB storage + 2GB RAM and $130 USD for the 32GB storage + 3GB RAM variant. You can choose from Cherry Pink, Champagne Gold and Mate Black colour.
