For most of us who reside outside of Europe, the chances are that we may have never heard of the name BQ before this. So here’s some info about the company. Their headquarters is in Madrid, Spain and have a very strong presence in Europe particularly in Portugal, Germany, Russia, France, Italy and Austria. They even have an office in Shenzhen, China to capitalise on the Asian market.

They have made a household name for themselves in the way of coming out with products for 3D printers and robotic kits, which is where the future is heading to. But when it comes to the smartphone industry, BQ doesn’t ring a bell at all.

It was almost a year ago, that we had done a review on BQ Aquaris X5 Plus which is summarised as per below:

  • 5-inch Full HD LTPS IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 1920 pixels or ~441 ppi pixel density
  • Dinorex glass protection
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Qualcomm MSM8976 Snapdragon 652 chipset, Quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A53 & Quad-core 1.8 GHz Cortex-A72, Adreno 510 and 2GB RAM
  • 16MP primary camera with f/2.0 aperture, phase detection autofocus and dual-LED (dual tone) flash
  • 8MP secondary camera with f/2.0 aperture and 1/4" sensor size
  • 16GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot maximum up to 256GB
  • Android Marshmallow 6.0
  • Dolby Atmos sound
  • Non-removable Li-Po 3200 mAh battery
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • June 2016 release date
  • 279.90 Euro or ~$309 USD price tag

Even back then last year, Aquaris X5 Plus was punching above its weight. And it is good to know that they are now back in the fold for us to scrutinise further their progress.

Try not to underestimate them as we take a closer look at Aquaris X which has the below specs:

  • 5.2-inch Full HD LTPS IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 1920 pixels or ~424 ppi pixel density
  • Dinorex glass protection
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Qualcomm MSM8953-Pro Snapdragon 626 chipset, Octa-core 2.2 GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Adreno 506 graphics and 3GB RAM
  • 16MP primary camera with f/2.0 aperture, phase detection autofocus and dual-LED (dual tone) flash
  • 8MP secondary camera with f/2.0 aperture, [email protected] and LED flash
  • 32GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot maximum up to 256GB
  • Android Nougat 7.1 OS
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 3100 mAh battery with Fast battery charging
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • Expected May 2017 release date
  • 289 Euro or ~$309 USD price tag

One year on, there’s some slight changes to the Aquaris X which is seen as a replacement for last year’s model. It will now be sporting a slightly larger 5.2-inch Full HD LTPS IPS screen which is nice. The Dinorex glass protection and fingerprint sensor from last year will be making a return.

Performance-wise, we can also expect some improvement with the Aquaris X sporting a better mid-range chipset, faster all-round octa-core processor and an additional 1GB RAM. This combination would mean that this smartphone would have no trouble running most apps and games that are out there. But wonder why they opt for a weaker Adreno 506 graphics?

As for the 16MP-8MP camera that is expected to be found on the Aquaris X, it will be no different as per last year’s model – except for a LED flash that will be fitted on the 8MP selfie camera. This means you can take brighter selfies that look better even while shooting in the dark.

Regarding storage, there’s double the amount now with 32GB of internal storage on the Aquaris X. Surely it will be enough to store all your photos, some apps and games that you like. But in case you want more storage, just pop in a microSD card that can take it all the way up to 256GB extra.

Although it will now be sporting a slightly smaller 3100 mAh battery, you can have a peace of mind knowing that the Aquaris X now comes with fast battery charging feature. This means you will be spending lesser time tied up while waiting it to be fully charged.

Finally, the latest Android Nougat 7.1 OS will accompany its release in May 2017. This means that all the newer features, functions and enhancements will be there to further bolster this smartphone’s performance.

Conclusion:

BQ Aquaris X is a step up in so many ways compared to last year’s model. Larger 5.2-inch screen, better overall performance, a LED flash on its selfie camera, twice the amount of storage, the latest Android operating system and the fast battery charging feature makes for a huge upgrade. Will be wondering on its availability outside of Europe though.

BQ Aquaris X is expected to be released in May 2017 for 289 Euro or ~$309 USD. There are two colours for you to choose from - Mineral Black and Pearl Rose.
