Having just recently released, Axon 7s had its roots to last year’s flagship model dubbed Axon 7. Instead of coming out with a new number, it got an “s” instead.

Before we begin, let’s check out Axon 7 from last year which has the following specs:

  • 5.5-inch 2K AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 1440 x 2560 pixels or ~538 ppi pixel density
  • All-metal design
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection
  • Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 820 chipset, Dual-core 2.15 GHz & Dual-core 1.6 GHz processor, Adreno 530 graphics and 4GB/6GB RAM
  • 20MP primary camera with f/1.8, phase detection autofocus, OIS, dual-LED (dual tone) flash
  • 8MP secondary camera
  • 64GB (for 4GB RAM model) or 128GB (for 6GB RAM model) + microSD expansion slot up to maximum 128GB
  • Dolby Atmos
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 3250 mAh battery with Fast battery charging: 83% in 30 minutes (Quick Charge 3.0)
  • Android Marshmallow 6.0
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • July 2016 release date
  • $439 USD price tag

The fact that Axon 7 sports a 2K screen in the middle of last year, it is a huge gamble that has since paid off. It was one of the first flagships of that time to do so, and it was a joy for us indeed.

Now that one year has passed since then, here’s the lowdown on Axon 7s:

  • 5.5-inch 2K AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 1440 x 2560 pixels or ~538 ppi pixel density
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 821 chipset, Quad-core (2x2.35 GHz Kryo & 2x1.6 GHz Kryo), Adreno 530 graphics and 6GB RAM
  • Dual 20MP+12MP primary camera with f/1.8 aperture, phase detection autofocus and dual-LED (dual tone) flash
  • 8MP secondary camera
  • 128GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to maximum 256GB
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 3400 mAh battery with Fast battery charging
  • Android Nougat 7.1
  • July 2017 release date
  • $489 USD price tag

One year is a long time in smartphone history, but Axon 7s hasn’t received a total overhaul that we would like it to have. But still, it packs a pretty punch although not as hard.

For starters, the screen remained the same with Axon 7s sporting the 5.5-inch 2K AMOLED screen with a fingerprint sensor. Unfortunately, there’s no metal body and Gorilla Glass 4 this time around; which is a big no-no.

Moving on to the hardware side of things, it is now so much better with the Snapdragon 821 chipset, fast Kryo quad-core processor, great graphics and a whopping 6GB RAM. Regarding performance, it is up there with the big boys indeed. There’s nothing that can stop the Axon 7s in its tracks.

Camera-wise, the primary camera is one of its strengths now with the dual 20MP+12MP camera with all the bells and whistles that you expect. You will enjoy taking photos with it, especially to be able to experiment with the bokeh effect. An 8MP selfie camera makes it complete.

By taking lots of photos, here’s another of Axon 7s advantage by having a huge 128GB internal storage to play around with. You should find ample space to install all your favourite apps and games, as well as to store thousands of high-res photos. Even then, the expansion slot can easily add 256GB of storage space.

As far as the battery goes, the 3400 mAh battery is more than capable to supply enough juice to the smartphone for it to last a full day in between charging.

Finally, the latest Android Nougat 7.1 operating system is available right out of the box for you to make full use of it.

ZTE Axon 7s continues the tradition of last year’s flagship although it is not able to fully realise its full potential. It does improve on its hardware and primary camera, but it takes a back seat on the metal body, Gorilla Glass 4 protection and Dolby sound system.

ZTE Axon 7s had just been released for approximately $489 USD and is only available in Gold colour.
