Asus Zenfone 4 ZE554KL: a $589 smartphone with Full HD AMOLED screen and dual 12MP+8MP primary camera

It was a year ago that Zenfone 3 was released, and there’s a whole bunch of variations for it. Today, we get to meet Asus Zenfone 4 ZE554KL, regarded as the most expensive in this new and exciting lineup.

Before we begin, let’s do a quick throwback to last year’s offering – Zenfone 3 as per below:

  • 5.2-inch Super IPS+ capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 1920 pixels or ~424 ppi pixel density
  • Metal body
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Gorilla Glass 3 protection
  • Qualcomm MSM8953 Snapdragon 625 chipset, Octa-core 2.0 GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Adreno 506 graphics and 3GB RAM
  • 16MP primary camera with f/2.0 aperture, laser/phase detection autofocus, OIS (4-axis) and dual-LED (dual tone) flash
  • 8MP secondary camera with f/2.0
  • 32GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to 256GB maximum
  • Android Marshmallow 6.0
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 2600 mAh battery
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • August 2016 release date
  • USD 425 price tag

Asus Zenfone 3 ZE520KL doesn’t just fit into the mid-range department. It has serious intention to dominate it. Metal body, mid-range hardware and great camera are some of its principal advantages. But there’s some issue with battery life, as it only comes with a limited 2600 mAh battery capacity.

We hope that this year will be so much better than the last. Let’s get acquainted with Zenfone 4 ZE554KL then:

  • 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 1920 pixels or ~401 ppi pixel density
  • Metal body
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Gorilla Glass 4 protection
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chipset, Octa-core (4x2.2 GHz Cortex-A53 & 4x1.8 GHz Cortex A53) processor, Adreno 508 graphics and 4GB RAM
  • Dual 12MP+8MP primary camera with autofocus and dual-LED (dual tone) flash
  • 8MP secondary camera
  • 64GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to 256GB maximum
  • Android Nougat 7.0
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 3300 mAh battery
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • September 2017 expected release date
  • 499 Euro or ~USD 589 estimated price tag

As you can see, there’s a whole lot of stuff going on to the upcoming Zenfone 4 ZE554KL. The first thing that you will notice is its larger 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED screen which is the right decision to make in this case. The similar metal body and fingerprint sensor will make a comeback, as well as an improved Gorilla Glass 4 protection.

Under the hood of the Zenfone 4 ZE554KL will be a nice upgrade with the mid-range Snapdragon 630 chipset, a fast octa-core processor, good graphics and a reasonable amount of 4GB RAM to complement it. With this combination going around, there’s enough power to run most apps and games with ease.

The most anticipated upgrade of all would be on its camera – more specifically the dual 12MP+8MP primary camera. With most smartphones embracing the dual camera technology this year, it is about time for Asus to come with its variant of it. The dual primary camera setup lets you take some amazing photos with it, and can experiment with the bokeh effect to good use. Unfortunately, the 8MP selfie camera doesn't seem to provide much improvement over last year’s model.

Regarding storage, Zenfone 4 ZE554KL now gets twice the amount with 64GB of internal storage available. Not enough? Just pop in a microSD card, and you are all set to go up to 256GB.

As for the operating system, the latest Android Nougat 7.0 is now available right out of the box, which is great news.

And to improve on last year’s weak link which is the battery, Zenfone 4 ZE554KL will now be featuring a 3300 mAh battery that should have no problem powering up the smartphone for at least a full day in between charging.

Asus Zenfone 4 ZE554KL provides a lot of nifty upgrades and updates from last year’s best-selling model. But it also comes with a heavy price tag, so you can consider it if you have the money to spend – and it will be money very well spent indeed.

Asus Zenfone 4 ZE554KL is expected to be released in September 2017 for 499 Euro or ~USD 589. It will be available in three fascinating colours – Black, Gold and Pink.
