If previously everyone is racing to come out with their version of dual camera, it is now time to introduce Fullview Display into the mainstream market. With the F5, it will mark Oppo’s first foray into the market.

Let us begin by doing a quick throwback at its predecessor, the F3:

  • 5.5-inch Full HD IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 1920 pixels or ~401 ppi pixel density
  • Metal body
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Gorilla Glass 5 protection
  • Mediatek MT6750 chipset, Octa-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Mali-T860MP2 graphics and 4GB RAM
  • 13MP primary camera with phase detection autofocus, OIS and LED flash
  • Dual 16MP + 8MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture and 1/3" sensor size
  • 64GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to 256GB maximum
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 3200 mAh battery with Fast battery charging (VOOC Flash Charge)
  • ColorOS 3.0 based on Android Marshmallow 6.0
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • May 2017 release date
  • $339 USD price tag

There’s no doubt that Oppo F3 is a mid-range smartphone that promises great camera experience with its dual 16MP+8MP selfie camera.

Having said that, let’s take a closer look at the F5 which is slated to be launched on November 2nd:

  • 6-inch Full HD IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 2160 pixels, 18:9 ratio or ~402 ppi density
  • Fullview Display
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • 4GB RAM
  • 20MP primary camera with phase detection autofocus and LED flash
  • Dual 12MP secondary camera
  • 64GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to 256GB maximum
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 4000 mAh battery
  • Android Nougat 7.0
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • November 2nd 2017 launch date

With a launch date fixed on November 2nd, details have so far been sketchy at best.

But what we already know so far, is that the F5 will be sporting a much larger 6-inch Full HD IPS screen with Fullview Display to maximise the screen’s real estate. Whether it will receive a metal body, is yet to be confirmed.

Moving on to the camera, a 20MP primary camera will be available on the F3 – which is incredible. What is even more exciting, is the fact that it will be featuring a dual 12MP selfie camera which is amazing. You will be having a blast taking loads of photos.

According to Oppo, “For the first time, the artificial intelligence technology has been integrated into selfies (front camera). The Selfie Expert will feature the ground-breaking AI Beauty technology - which uses artificial intelligence from a massive global photo database, to beautify a selfie shot," the company says in a release ahead of the launch.

Due to the better selfie camera, Oppo also wants you to use facial recognition to unlock the F5. Although facial recognition is nothing new, as we've seen with Samsung with its Iris scanner and Apple’s new Face ID. According to them, their facial unlock feature can be activated in just 0.4 seconds. They added that Face Unlock is convenient and safe, but you can always select other unlocking methods such as fingerprint, password and pattern unlock.

With the F5 having 64GB of internal storage, that’s more than enough for you to install all your favourite apps and games. But if you intend to snap photos after photos of high resolution, then you can easily add more space – up to 256GB to be exact.

Battery-wise, the F5 will be powered by a 4000 mAh battery which seems to be capable enough to supply juice to the smartphone for a full day of charge.

Conclusion:

Oppo F5 is set to introduce a viable option in the mid-range segment of the market. It will be interesting to see it stack up against the crowd, especially with its large 6-inch Full HD IPS screen with Fullview display, great 20MP primary camera, amazing dual 12MP selfie camera, large 64GB storage and a large 4000 mAh battery to boot. The only missing piece of the puzzle is on its hardware and retail price.

Oppo F5 is expected to be launched on November 2nd although there’s still no word on its price. It is said to be available in Gold and Rose Gold colour.
