Sharp Aquos S3 Mini attempts to blur the line between mid-range and flagship.

But before we begin, the predecessor Aquos S2 was released almost seven months ago with the below specs:

  • 5-inch Full HD IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 2040 pixels or ~420 ppi pixel density
  • Front/back glass and aluminum frame body
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chipset, Octa-core (4x2.2 GHz Cortex-A53 & 4x1.8 GHz Cortex A53) processor, Adreno 508 graphics with 4GB RAM
  • Dual 12MP (f/1.8 aperture, 1.4 µm, Dual Pixel PDAF) + 8MP secondary camera, phase detection autofocus and dual-LED dual-tone flash
  • 8MP secondary camera with (f/2.0 aperture, 1/3.2", 1.4 µm)
  • 64GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to maximum 256GB
  • Android Nougat 7.1.1
  • Non-removable Li-Po 3020 mAh battery with Fast battery charging
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • August 2017 release date
  • ~ USD 555 price tag

With amazingly good looks, mid-range performance, great dual 12MP-8MP primary camera and large 64GB storage are just some of its uniqueness back then.

It's 2018 and we are set to see the debut of Aquos S3 Mini very soon:

  • 5.5-inch Full HD IGZO IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 2040 pixels, 17:9 ratio or ~420 ppi density
  • Front/back glass & aluminum frame
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Qualcomm SDM630 Snapdragon 630 chipset, Octa-core 2.2 GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Adreno 508 graphics with 6GB RAM
  • 16MP primary camera with f/2.0 aperture, phase detection autofocus and LED flash
  • 20MP secondary camera with (f/2.0 aperture, 2.0 µm)
  • 64GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to maximum 256GB
  • Android Nougat 7.1.1
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 3020 mAh battery with Fast battery charging
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • March 2018 release date
  • 1,599 Chinese Yuan or ~ USD 249 price tag

Aquos S3 Mini is set to feature a better 5.5-inch Full HD IGZO IPS screen as its primary forte. It will have a similar glass body on the front and back with an all-aluminium frame.

Regarding performance, we can expect that the Aquos S3 Mini to have more power with the faster octa-core processor and an extra 2GB RAM on top of the similar Snapdragon 630 chipset and Adreno 508 graphics.

Camera-wise, the Aquos S3 Mini seems to be reshuffling its priorities with the slightly weaker 16MP primary camera but substantially better 20MP selfie camera, as compared to its predecessor. This means you get to take more great-looking selfies with this smartphone.

Moving on to the storage, the Aquos S3 Mini will adopt a similar 64GB internal storage that can also be upgraded up to a maximum of 256GB of additional space.

Conclusion:

Sharp Aquos S3 Mini is indeed an upgrade as compared to its predecessor. Better screen technology, slightly faster performance and an amazing 20MP selfie camera to boot. There are other features that remained the same, and the deal-breaker was the outdated Android Nougat 7.1.1 OS.

Sharp Aquos S3 Mini is said to be released very soon and will be available for 1,599 Chinese Yuan or ~ USD 249 price tag. You get to choose either Blue, Black or Gold colours to go with the smartphone.
