Meizu 15: A great find for just $390 USD

With Meizu 15 having just released in China, let’s see why it is selling like hot cakes over there.

To be frank, it seems like Meizu came out with this new lineup to cater to the high-end segment without any of the high-end pricing. But before we begin, let’s do a quick throwback to the previous M6 Note as per below specs:

  • 5.5-inch Full HD IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 1920 pixels or ~403 ppi pixel density
  • Metal body
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Qualcomm MSM8953 Snapdragon 625 chipset, Octa-core 2.0 GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Adreno 506 graphics and 3GB/4GB RAM
  • Dual 12MP+5MP primary camera with f/1.9 aperture, phase detection autofocus and quad-LED (dual tone) flash
  • 16MP secondary camera with f/2.0 aperture
  • 16GB/32GB/64GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to maximum 256GB
  • Android Nougat 7.1
  • Non-removable 4000 mAh battery with Fast battery charging
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • September 2017 release date
  • 195 USD for 16GB + 3GB RAM and 229 USD for 32GB + 3GB RAM

The amount of value that we got out of the M6 Note was simply astonishing. With this kind of price, you will be getting a very solid mid-range smartphone with dual 12MP+5MP primary camera and a large 4000 mAh battery among other things.

Now let’s turn our attention to the Meizu 15 for a change:

  • 5.46-inch Full HD Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 1920 pixels, 16:9 ratio or ~403 ppi density
  • Metal body
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Qualcomm SDM660 Snapdragon 660 chipset, Octa-core (4x2.2 GHz Kryo 260 & 4x1.8 GHz Kryo 260) processor, Adreno 512 graphics and 4GB RAM
  • Dual 12MP (f/1.8, aperture 1/2.3", 1.55 µm) + 20MP primary camera (1/2.8", 1.0 µm) with 4-axis OIS, 2x optical zoom, dual pixel phase and laser detection autofocus, six-LED dual-tone flash
  • 20MP secondary camera with f/2.0 aperture
  • 64GB/128GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to maximum 256GB
  • Android 7.1.2 Nougat
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery with Fast battery charging (54% in just 30 minutes)
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • April 2018 release date
  • 2,499 Chinese Yuan or ~390 USD price tag

Seven months or so has passed, and now Meizu 15 is looking to establish a stronghold over others in its similar price range.

Starting with its 5.46-inch Full HD Super AMOLED screen, there’s the metal body and fingerprint sensor as usual. Although there’s no Fullview display to be seen though.

Under the hood of the Meizu 15, is the Snapdragon 660 chipset which combines well regarding performance and power. To make life more interesting there’s the fast Kryo octa-core processor, good Adreno 512 graphics and 4GB RAM. There are only a few things that will make this smartphone slow down or would give it any trouble at all.

Camera-wise, we can find the Meizu 15 blessed with the high-end dual 12MP+20MP primary camera. It is entirely loaded with all the bells and whistles that let you take some of the most amazing shots with bokeh effect. It comes packed with all that is needed to bring the perfect night shot. Using the highest quality camera components, in combination with software algorithms to enhance photo quality in low-light, this marks a new era in mobile photography. As for the 20MP selfie camera, there’s the AI technology that takes your photos and improved it further based on age, gender, and various other factors—all intelligently identified.

Regarding storage, you get to choose either with 64GB or 128GB of internal storage. Whichever way you go with, there’s still the option to add 256GB via the microSD expansion slot.

Moving on to the battery side of things, the Meizu 15 is powered by a 3000 mAh battery that have no trouble supplying the necessary juice to power up the smartphone for a full day of charge.

One sad thing though is the fact that it is still running on the dated Android Nougat 7.1 OS. That is so 2017, and we expect more of them in 2018!

Meizu 15 had a good start after its release in China back in April 2018, as the amount of value that it dishes out is just too great. A 5.46-inch Full HD Super AMOLED screen, good mid-range performance with the Snapdragon 660 chipset and 4GB RAM, a superb 12MP+20MP primary camera with lots of excellent features and functions, and a great 20MP selfie camera to cement its position as a great camera smartphone.

Meizu 15 had just been released in China for approximately 2,499 Chinese Yuan or ~ USD 390. Four colours for you to choose from: Indigo, White, Ink and Yakin.
