If you are looking around for a budget smartphone, then perhaps Vodafone Smart N9 is what you are looking for. It is priced at just 109 British Pound or ~$140 USD, which is cheap – but is it any good?

It was just over a year ago that the Smart N8 first burst onto the scene with the following specs:

  • 5-inch HD IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 720 x 1280 pixels or ~294 ppi pixel density
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Mediatek MT6737 chipset, Quad-core 1.3 GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Mali-T720MP2 graphics and 1.5GB RAM
  • 13MP primary camera with autofocus and LED flash
  • 5MP secondary camera
  • 16GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to 32GB maximum
  • Android Nougat 7.0
  • Li-Ion 2400 mAh battery
  • 4G LTE
  • June 2017 release date
  • 85 British Pound or ~ USD 109 price tag

Vodafone Smart N8 is targeting those at the entry-level with small 5-inch HD IPS screen and some basic hardware such as a fingerprint sensor, 13MP-5MP camera setup and Android Nougat operating system.

With that in mind, where does its successor – the Smart N9 stand? Let’s check out its specs as per below:

  • 5.5-inch HD IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 720 x 1440 pixels, 18:9 ratio or ~293 ppi density
  • Fullview display
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Mediatek MT6739WA chipset, Quad-core 1.3 GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Mali-T720MP2 graphics and 2GB RAM
  • 13MP primary camera with autofocus and LED flash
  • 8MP secondary camera with LED flash
  • 16GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to 32GB maximum
  • Android Oreo 8.1
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 2900 mAh battery
  • Single SIM and 4G LTE
  • June 2018 release date
  • 109 British Pound or ~ USD 140 price tag

One year on, and it seems that the Smart N9 manages to become relevant in 2018. Starting with a larger 5.5-inch screen with Fullview display, there’s more screen real estate.

But then, under the hood of the Smart N9 shows no real improvement – other than the newer chipset that is being used.

Processor, graphics and the memory of 2GB stays the same.

Moving on to the camera side of things, there’s the upgraded 13MP-8MP primary camera on the Smart N9. With both having the benefit of a LED flash, all your pics will shine brightly.

The latest Android Oreo 8.1 is available right out of the box on the Smart N9. This will allow it to have some new features as well as enhancements that should give it a slight performance boost.

Finally, the battery gets a nice 20% upgrade that now stands at 2900 mAh battery capacity. No problem for it to last for a full day of charge easily.

Conclusion:

Vodafone Smart N9 refreshes itself and tries to stay current for the year 2018. One year after its predecessor, you get some nice upgrades in the form of a larger 5.5-inch screen with Fullview display, slightly better chipset, an improved 8MP selfie camera with LED flash, the latest Oreo 8.1 operating system and a bump in the battery size.

Vodafone Smart N9 is currently available for approximately 109 British Pound or ~ USD 140 and is available in Silver Aluminium and Black Titanium colour.
