Labeled as a smartphone that is designed to entertain, let’s take a closer look at what Sony Xperia XA2 Plus has to offer.

Earlier this year, we have the Xperia XA2 Ultra with the below specs:

  • 6-inch Full HD IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 1920 pixels, 16:9 ratio or ~367 ppi density
  • Aluminium frame with plastic back
  • Gorilla Glass 4 protection
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chipset, Octa-core 2.2 GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Adreno 508 graphics and 4GB RAM
  • 23MP primary camera with (f/2.0 aperture, 24mm, 1/2.3"), phase detection autofocus and LED flash with 120° super wide-angle
  • Dual 16MP primary camera (f/2.0, 23mm, 1/2.6", OIS, AF) + 8MP (f/2.4, 1/4") with 120° super wide-angle

  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • February 2018 release date
  • USD 450 price tag

There’s plenty of stuff that goes on with the Xperia XA2 Ultra, but the price is holding it slightly back. You can say that the camera is top-notch, while the performance is in the mid-range segment; but there are plenty of other options in this price range.

Now then, let’s scrutinise the Xperia XA2 Plus further and see what it has to offer:

  • 6-inch Full HD+ IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 2160 pixels, 18:9 ratio or ~402 ppi density
  • Fullview display
  • Metal body
  • Gorilla Glass 5 protection
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Qualcomm SDM630 Snapdragon 630 chipset, Octa-core 2.2 GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Adreno 508 graphics and 4GB/6GB RAM
  • 23MP primary camera with f/2.0 aperture, 24mm, 1/2.3" and PDAF
  • 8MP secondary camera with f/2.4 aperture and 1/4"
  • 32GB/64GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to maximum 400GB
  • Android Oreo 8.0
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 3580 mAh battery with Fast battery charging (Quick Charge 3.0)
  • High-Resolution Audio
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • August 2018 expected release date

A quick glance at both smartphones, there isn’t anything significant between the two. Other than the XA2 Plus will feature the upgraded Gorilla Glass 5 protection, an option to go for 6GB RAM and high-resolution audio.

Let’s talk about the entertainment aspect of the smartphone since that is the uniqueness that Sony is pitching on.

First is with its 6-inch Full HD+ IPS screen that provides for an extended display. Now you can view more with its higher resolution. Design-wise, every part of the Xperia XA2 Plus has been expertly crafted with carefully diamond cut top and bottom edges. The borderless design and metallic finishing are elegant to look at and comfortable to hold. It is made with comfort, style and durability in mind, and comes well-protected with the Corning® Gorilla® Glass 5.

With High-Resolution Audio it feels like you are in the room with your favourite artist. DSEE HX™ lifts all your music, taking it closer to high-resolution quality. You will also get rich sound quality, as music comes through loud and clear with the built-in Smart Amplifier technology.

The camera side lets you capture unexpected moments in crystal clear detail with Xperia XA2 Plus´s 23 MP camera with Exmor RS™ for mobile sensor. You just focus on making memories, then point and shoot; and let Superior Auto think for you. Ready yourself with beautiful effects with Portrait Selfie mode, like soft skin or bokeh effect which defocuses the background to give you flattering, artistic images. Get even more friends and background in your shots with the 120° super wide-angle 8MP selfie camera.

Some might say that the 3580 mAh battery is on the low side, but there’s the Smart Stamina that helps your battery keep going as long as you do. It predicts how long your power will last, based on how you normally use your phone; and prompts you with the best time to activate STAMINA mode to keep you going.

Finally, the Android Oreo 8.0 operating system found on the Xperia XA2 Plus is the perfect compliment to ensure smooth operation with all the features and functions that you will need from it.

Conclusion:

Sony Xperia XA2 Plus seems like a mixed bag though. Sure, you get the Full HD+ resolution that lets you view more stuff on-screen, an option for 6GB RAM, excellent sound system and better protection with Gorilla Glass 5 – but took a hit on the selfie camera. It will all boil down to its price in the end.

Sony Xperia XA2 Plus is expected to be released in August 2018 although there’s no confirmation on the price yet. There are four colours to choose from, namely Silver, Black, Gold and Green.
