image

In keeping up with the times, Google Pixel 3 makes its mark onto the flagship scene for the year 2018. Should you get all excited about it?

But before we begin, let’s first do a quick throwback to last year’s Pixel 2 for our comparison purpose:

  • 5-inch Full HD AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 1920 pixels or ~441 ppi pixel density
  • Gorilla Glass 5 protection
  • IP67 certified - dust and water resistant up to 1 meter and 30 minutes
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 835 chipset, Octa-core (4x2.35 GHz Kryo & 4x1.9 GHz Kryo) processor, Adreno 540 and 4GB RAM
  • 12.2MP primary camera with f/1.8, OIS, phase detection & laser autofocus and dual-LED flash
  • 8MP secondary camera with f/2.4 aperture, 1/3.2" sensor size and 1.4 µm pixel size
  • 64GB/128GB internal storage with no expansion slot
  • Android Oreo 8.0
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 2700 mAh battery with Fast battery charging
  • 4G LTE
  • October 2017 release date
  • 649USD for 64GB storage & 749USD for 128GB storage

Google Pixel 2 back then was the crème de la crème. Everything about it was amazing, pretty much you would expect from a Pixel smartphone.

With that in mind,  we are all set to get Google Pixel 3 in a few days’ time. Here’s the lowdown of it:

  • 5.5-inch Full HD P-OLED capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 2160 pixels, 18:9 ratio or ~443 ppi density
  • Fullview display
  • Front/back glass (Gorilla Glass 5), aluminium frame
  • Gorilla Glass 5 protection
  • IP68 certified - dust and water resistant up to 1 meter and 30 minutes
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Qualcomm SDM845 Snapdragon 845 (10 nm) chipset, Octa-core (4x2.5 GHz Kryo 385 Gold & 4x1.6 GHz Kryo 385 Silver) processor, Adreno 630 graphics and 4GB RAM
  • 12.2MP primary camera with f/1.8 aperture, 28mm (wide), 1/2.55", 1.4µm, OIS and dual pixel PDAF
  • Dual 8MP selfie camera with f/1.8 aperture, 28mm (wide) and PDAF + 8MP with f/2.2 aperture, 19mm (ultrawide), no AF and Auto-HDR
  • 64GB/128GB internal storage with no expansion slot
  • Android Pie 9.0
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 2915 mAh battery with Fast battery charging and Qi wireless charging
  • 4G LTE
  • October 18th 2018 expected release date
  • $799 USD for 64GB storage & $899 USD for 128GB storage

One year on, and it is getting hard for Pixel 3 to improve on last year’s already (and still) amazing flagship.

In keeping up with user’s preference, it is getting the 5.5-inch Full P-OLED screen with Fullview display. Regarding protection, the IP68 certification makes it better equipped against any disaster that might happen.

Regarding hardware, you will get an upgrade to the Snapdragon 845 chipset, a fast octa-core processor, great graphics but still with just 4GB RAM.

Moving on to the camera, it seems that the similar 12.2MP primary camera makes a return with some slight improvements. With Top Shot, it automatically recommends the best pics where no one is blinking, and everything looks just right. Super Res Zoom keeps your pictures sharp when you zoom in—without the blur. The biggest benefit is on its dual 8MP+8MP selfie camera and all the technology that it has to offer. Get everyone in your selfies as it lets you take group selfies.

One huge advantage of getting a Google smartphone is you can now keep all your memories with unlimited online storage. Google Photos gives you free, unlimited online storage for all your original quality photos and 4K videos.

The reason could well be that it comes with the latest operating system that Google has to offer – Android Pie 9.0. Nothing beats the best software with the best hardware going hand-in-hand.

Battery-wise, the Pixel 3 now has a slightly higher capacity with the 2915 mAh battery. Shouldn’t be a problem to supply enough juice to power it up for a full day of charge. The Adaptive Battery technology learns your behaviour over time and limits battery for apps you use less often.

Conclusion:

Google Pixel 3 is the smartphone that you have been looking for all this while. Never mind that it comes a bit late in 2018 though, as the saying “Save the best for last” is true in this case.

Google Pixel 3 is all set for an October 18th release date for a price tag of USD 799 for the 64GB storage variant and USD 899 for the 128GB storage variant. You get to choose three colours, namely Clearly White, Just Black and Not Pink.
