Google Pixel 3a XL: why spend more when you have this $479 smartphone

You either love it or hate it when it comes to Google with their smartphones (not the operating system), but with the Google Pixel 3a XL – we have an affordable smartphone with everything that you need.

Now in its third edition, there’s the ‘normal’ version and then there’s the ‘XL’ or upsized version. Why don’t we check out the Pixel 3a first?

  • 5.6-inch Full HD+ OLED capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 2220 pixels, 18.5:9 ratio or ~441 ppi density
  • Fullview display
  • Always-on display
  • Front glass and plastic body
  • Asahi Dragontrail Glass
  • Qualcomm SDM670 Snapdragon 670 (10 nm) chipset, Octa-core (2x2.0 GHz 360 Gold & 6x1.7 GHz Kryo 360 Silver) processor, Adreno 615 graphics and 4GB RAM
  • 12.2MP primary camera with f/1.8 aperture, 28mm (wide), 1/2.55", 1.4µm, OIS, dual pixel PDAF, Dual-LED flash, HDR and panorama

  • Android Pie 9.0
  • Non-removable Li-Po 3000 mAh battery with Fast battery charging
  • 4G LTE
  • May 2019 release date
  • USD 399 price tag

As you can see, there’s nothing too fancy about the Pixel 3a, and it just delivers the right amount of everything.

Now then, let’s turn our attention to the Pixel 3a XL which has the following specs:

  • 6.0-inch Full HD+ OLED capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 2160 pixels, 18:9 ratio or ~402 ppi density
  • Fullview display
  • Always-on display
  • Front glass and plastic body
  • Asahi Dragontrail Glass
  • Qualcomm SDM670 Snapdragon 670 (10 nm) chipset, Octa-core (2x2.0 GHz 360 Gold & 6x1.7 GHz Kryo 360 Silver) processor, Adreno 615 graphics and 4GB RAM
  • 12.2MP primary camera with f/1.8 aperture, 28mm (wide), 1/2.55", 1.4µm, OIS, dual pixel PDAF, Dual-LED flash, HDR and panorama
  • 8MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture, 24mm (wide), 1.12µm and HDR
  • 64GB internal storage with no expansion slot
  • Android Pie 9.0
  • Non-removable Li-Po 3700 mAh battery with Fast battery charging
  • 4G LTE
  • May 2019 release date
  • USD 479 price tag

As you see, there are two major differences that the Pixel 3a XL has over the Pixel 3a is on its larger size. One is the larger 6.0-inch Full HD+ OLED screen, and the other is the 3700 mAh battery.

A bigger phone would require a more significant battery.

The Pixel 3a XL still sports other features like the mid-range hardware in the form of the Snapdragon 670 paired with a fast Kryo octa-core processor, excellent graphics and 4GB RAM.

There’s still the 12.2MP primary camera found on it, with no word of a dual primary camera, let alone a triple camera setup. Then there’s the 8MP selfie camera, even though others in this price range have been using a dual selfie camera setup.

You then have to contend with just 64GB of internal storage with no expansion options. This means you have to turn to cloud storage for extra space.

Conclusion:

Google Pixel 3a XL costs USD 80 more than its ‘normal’ version, and it only brings about slightly larger screen size and a bigger battery. You be the judge whether that extra baggage is worth the extra money.

Google Pixel 3a XL had just been released for $479 and is available in Just Black, Clearly White and Purple-ish colours.
