Huawei P Smart Z: 6.59-inch smartphone with 16MP pop-up selfie camera and 4000 mAh battery for $350

We can see the trend these days to have a concealed selfie camera that pops up when needed. With the Huawei P Smart Z, we can see it making an entrance with this Chinese manufacturer.

But before we begin, we do have a champion smartphone camera by Huawei called the Nova 4e. Check out its specs as per below:

  • 6.15-inch Full HD+ IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 2312 pixels or ~415 ppi density
  • Fullview display
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Hisilicon Kirin 710 (12 nm) chipset, Octa-core (4x2.2 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4x1.7 GHz Cortex-A53) processor, Mali-G51 MP4 graphics and 4GB/6GB RAM
  • Triple primary camera: 24MP with f/1.8 aperture, (wide) and PDAF + 8MP with 13mm (ultrawide) + 2MP with f/2.4 aperture, depth sensor, LED flash, HDR and panorama

  • 1,999 Chinese Yuan or ~299 USD for 128GB internal storage + 4GB RAM and 2,299 Chinese Yuan or ~340 USD for 128GB internal storage + 6GB RAM

The Nova 4e is fully loaded with great offerings at a very affordable price. Large 6.15-inch screen, great performance, triple camera setup, 32MP selfie camera, huge 128GB internal storage and a battery that can last a whole day. With that in mind, where do we go from here?

Now let’s turn our attention to the P Smart Z for a change and scrutinise it further:

  • 6.59-inch Full HD+ LTPS IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 2340 pixels, 19.5:9 ratio or ~391 ppi density
  • Fullview display
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Hisilicon Kirin 710F (12 nm) chipset, Octa-core (4x2.2 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4x1.7 GHz Cortex-A53) processor, Mali-G51 MP4 graphics and 4GB RAM
  • Dual primary camera: 16MP with f/1.8 aperture and PDAF + 2MP with f/2.4 aperture, depth sensor, LED flash, HDR and panorama
  • Motorized pop-up 16MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture
  • 64GB internal storage with microSD expansion slot up to 1TB maximum
  • Android Pie 9.0
  • Non-removable Li-Po 4000 mAh battery
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • June 2019 release date
  • 279 British Pound or ~350 USD price tag

A glance through and we can find the P Smart Z is a bit of a mixed bag, some improvements, some similarities and some downgrades as well.

For starters, it now comes with a slightly larger 6.59-inch Full HD+ LTPS IPS screen that features a unique dividing line that makes this design stand out from the rest. On the smooth back, the distinctive silk texture shimmers under the light, and you can see the fine details.

Under the hood of the P Smart Z is the improved Kirin 710F chipset paired with a fast octa-core processor that efficiently enhances the running speed and lowers power consumption. It is built to run smoothly even if you are playing graphics-intensive games and live-streaming going on.

The primary camera is a step down from the triple camera setup. Here you can find it sporting the 16MP-2MP combination instead. Perhaps the best part is on its selfie camera that automatically pops up in just 1 second when you take a selfie and retracts when you are done. The camera is always available so you can take selfies with endless fun. It comes equipped with an AI front camera that offers real-time image optimising in 8 scenes and will intelligently adjust the retouching intensity.

In terms of storage, the P Smart Z is blessed with 64GB of internal storage that can easily be expanded up to a maximum of 1TB. You definitely won’t run out of space anytime soon.

Finally, the powerful built-in 4000 mAh battery works with the smart power-saving processor to greatly increase the device’s overall power efficiency. The result – no problem to power up the smartphone for a full day or two.

Conclusion:

Huawei P Smart Z is a fine smartphone in introducing the motorised selfie camera, that comes along with large 6.59-inch screen size and stunningly good looks. But if you were to compare to others, it struggles to provide great value for money.

Huawei P Smart Z had just been released for 279 British Pound or ~350 USD. Three colours available, namely Emerald Green, Midnight Black and Sapphire Blue.
