Nginx, Inc., the commercial arm of Open source Web server developer NGINX, today announced that it helped develop the technology for Open Connect, the Netflix content delivery initiative.
The work with Netflix included design, implementation and tuning of the NGINX Web server software and the underlying operating system as well as product technical support. Support services are the basis of Nginx, Inc.'s commercial offerings for companies using its open source Web server in mission-critical applications. "We're honored that Netflix turned to Nginx, Inc.'s professional services for the complex optimization tasks that this ambitious project required," said Andrew Alexeev, co-founder of Nginx, Inc.
Serving more than 26 million streaming members globally, Netflix is the world's leading Internet subscription service for enjoying movies and TV shows. Netflix has been delivering a billion hours of movies and TV shows per month, and petabytes of data exclusively through commercial content delivery networks. With the goal of a faster, less expensive Internet for all, Netflix recently established Open Connect, its own single-purpose content delivery network. Nginx, Inc. is backing this unique project of creating a fast, scalable, and cost-efficient solution for streaming video delivery.
"We chose the NGINX Web server software because of its proven scalability and performance," said Ken Florance, vice president of content delivery at Netflix. "By working directly with the core engineering team at Nginx, Inc., we received great development support for our project."
