New Trend Micro™ Mobile Security 7 enables organisations and employees to realise the increased productivity of the consumerisation of IT by mitigating security, data protection and device management risks
SYDNEY, Australia – Monday 18, July, 2011 – Trend Micro Incorporated (TSE: 4704), a global leader in Internet content security, is helping organisations embrace consumerisation and unlock full business potential. As personal and professional lives become more intertwined, employees are using their own consumer-grade tablets, smartphones and PCs for work – regardless of company policies.
The consumerisation of IT carries with it a unique blend of strategic and operational challenges. The lack of a planned approach to consumerisation creates security risk, financial exposure and a management nightmare for IT. Despite these risks, the consumerisation of IT represents a great opportunity for organisations of all sizes to drive increases in productivity, business agility, and customer and employee satisfaction.
The increased use of smartphones in business has made many IT managers apprehensive about the security implications. Smartphones are perceived to be much more of a potential threat to security than are other new technologies. The workspace is now accessed by physical clients that are increasingly remote and mobile. The trend that began with thin terminals is expanding to iPads and other tablets and smartphones.
The accessibility of the virtual desktop from multiple locations and devices has expanded the user workspace to be everywhere and anywhere. The desktop is now mobile, ubiquitous, thin, and heterogeneous. The user session now defines the desktop and spans multiple network locations within the data centre and remotely out across the WAN. Hence, an agent can no longer reside in a single location and provide coverage of the desktop – endpoint security must now span multiple network locations. The workspace is now accessed by physical clients that are increasingly remote and mobile. The trend that began with thin terminals is expanding to iPads and other tablets and smartphones.
“The pressure to allow and support different devices purchased by employees raises new IT challenges,” said Glynn Stokes, Product Marketing Manager, Trend Micro ANZ. “With Trend Micro Mobile Security 7, IT personnel can begin to meet these challenges and allow their companies to take full advantage of the benefits from consumerisation.”
A recent survey by Trend Micro of Australian and New Zealand enterprise IT(1) decision-makers with more than 500 employees revealed several important points about the way consumerisation is proceeding in corporate IT environments:
- The increased use of smartphones in business has made many IT managers apprehensive about the security implications. Smartphones are perceived to be much more of a potential threat to security than are other new technologies. One in five (21 per cent) say it is the “most concerning” technology trend, and nearly half (41 per cent) say it is of “high concern”.
- The level of concern about smartphones is spread across all sizes of organisation, and is particularly strong in government with 73 per cent of respondents noted a higher level of security concern for new technologies
- Web 2.0 (use of blogs, Twitter etc.) security is of least concern with just under one in five (18 per cent) say it is a low concern, and 14 per cent say they are not concerned at all.
